CSR Activities

Family Bank Limited has made deliberate efforts to demonstrate leadership in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Indeed, it’s against this background that Family Bank, then Family Finance Building Society, was established 25 years ago. As a responsible Corporate citizen, Family Bank prides itself by contributing towards positive transformation of life in the areas of environmental, social and economic well-being of the society in which it operates. Indeed, Family Bank’s CSR Policy underpins the whole essence of its existence – to positively transform life.

Education
Family Bank supports education initiatives with an aim to build and enhance capacity. The bank has contributed cash and other related donations towards the support of education to the Kenya Private Schools Association AGM, Kshs. 60,000 being sponsorship for the 38th University of Nairobi Accounting Students Association Anniversary Dinner, support of the vulnerable Student’s Education and in addition donated trophies to various schools to award the best students and schools during prize giving events. We have also constructed two classrooms at Langas Primary School in Eldoret as well as boosting the Othaya Bursary with Kshs 200,000. Family Bank further sponsors Keriri Women University with Kshs 100,000

Talent Development
The Bank runs initiative of the University Talent Development (UTD) Program. This program targets and benefits the best boy and girl in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) from each of the eight (8) provinces inthe country. Since inception of the program, Family Bank has given several young secondary school graduates an opportunity to work with the Bank and get exposed to work environment as they prepare to join various Universities. Family Bank working environment ensures that the trainees are mentored with an aim of making them responsible citizens as they join the institutions of higher learning. In addition, the Trainees get an opportunity to save in a safe environment for their university tuition fees.

Environmental
The bank is keen to lead in corporate stewardship with regard to environmental management. In this regard, Family Bank in partnership with the Municipal Council of Nakuru participated in a clean-up exercise for Nakuru Town. This initiative was well received and inspired the business community in the town to develop strategies for continuous improvement. Family Bank was the first bank in Kenya to introduce paperless banking through smart card technology that enables customers to transact without having to fill in deposit or withdrawal slips, this is a great step toward going green and being environmental friendly thus contributing towards the millennium development goal of ensuring environmental sustainability. Family Bank has also formed a green team that supports tree planting and environment cleaning initiatives. In addition, the lending policy of Bank ensures due diligence by advancing credit to environmental friendly projects.

Contributions to Social causes

In line with our vision, "To be the Financial Institution that leads in the positive transformation of People’s Lives", Family Bank contributed Kshs 101,500 to the jigger eradication campaign run by Ahadi Kenya Trust. The Trust is working towards fumigating 370 homesteads and over 20 schools in Gitugi Location, Muranga District with an aim to prevent the recurrence of Jigger infestation. The funds contributed were used to purchase spraying kits for the schools and homesteads of those infected and affected by jiggers. To ensure sustainable community development we have extended donations to charity homes such as Endebess Children’s Home in Trans Nzoia, Kisii Children’s Home, Imani Children’s Home in Kayole, Springs of Hope Orphanage in Machakos, Kuluthira Children’s home, and the Little Sisters of the Poor in Kasarani. The Bank also sponsors trainings for farmers in various field days. Donations have also been extended to those affected and infected with HIV /AIDS through the leadership of Nairobi City Council. Additionally, the Bank and individual staff also contributed foodstuff to feed the hunger stricken Kenyans in the Eastern Province; blankets and mattresses to the victims of post-election violence. During the Christmas festivities, all the Family Bank staff contributes clothes and other items to children and other needy homes situated across the entire branch network.

Sports

Family Bank staff with part of the Harambee Stars Team: The bank was one of the sponsors who supported the Harambee Stars trip to the Guinea.

The Bank aims at growing the whole person through professional and talent development. To achieve this, the Bank, through corporate sponsorships for sporting events partnered with the Kenya Data Networks (KDN) in support of the Kenya National Football Team – Harambee Stars’ trip to Guinea, for the World Cup cum Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in October 2008 (Kipepeo Football 7-Aside tournament). A similar sponsorship was made in support of the East and Southern Africa Dairy Association Football tournament in support of the small and medium sized dairy industries. Other sporting activities include: Eldoret Half Marathon: In association with the Athletics Kenya Association Eldoret branch, Family Bank sponsored a half marathon in Eldoret on 14th September 2008 for the second year running. This event went a long way in promoting the s p o r t i n g talent amongst our youth. Over 800 athletes participated in the event which was graced by the Chairman of Family Bank Mr. T.K. Muya and one of the Bank’s Directors, Prof David Kimutai Arap Some. To crown the event, the Bank hosted the participants into a sumptuous lunch at Mariot Hotel. In an endeavor to build lasting relationships with our customers, the Bank sponsored Family Bank Open Golf tournament on 13th September 2008 at Kiambu Golf Club. The ceremony was crowned by the Chief Executive who presented trophies to the winners. In the same spirit Family Bank contributed towards the sponsorship of the Centenary Celebrations of Parklands Sports Club Golf tournament held at Royal Golf Club. The bank also sponsored a golf tournament at the Nyahururu club.

In Conclusion
Family Bank’s commitment to the positive transformation of People’s lives has encouraged the employees, shareholders and other stakeholders to identify areas that need participation and attention. This has gone along way to integrating the Bank with its environment
